George Hoyt Phillips, Jr. of Rolla, Missouri passed away peacefully on 25 August 2026 at the Phelps Health Hospital. Born on 17 December 1926 in Little Rock, Arkansas, he was over 99 years old.
George was the only son of Gladys and George Phillips. Born during hard times, George worked at an early age to help his family make ends meet. His escape from poverty began when drafted in the U.S. Army during WWII. As a WWII Veteran he would go on to serve over 21 years active duty and retire as a Master Sergeant.
While stationed in Germany, he would meet the love of his life, Marianne Jane (Kollmuss) Phillips, and they were married for 70 years before her passing in 2022. They would raise 3 children while traveling the world over. George was devoted to his family and his country. His lineage was traced back to the Revolutionary War and he was a member of the Sons of the American Revolution (SAR) and the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW). After his military retirement, George worked for the Department of the Army as a Federal Employee for over 20 years.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Jane, his son, Klaus, and daughter-inlaw Teresa. He is survived by his daughter, Cornelia Dodds, his son Carl Phillips, and his daughter-in-law, Debbie Phillips. In addition, he is survived by his grandchildren Nicole (Shawn), Katy (Zack), and Maggie (Keith) and his great-grandchildren, Syd, June, Kieran and Grayson.
The family wishes to acknowledge the care and compassion George received from the staff and residents of Parkside Assisted Living in Rolla. We also wish to thank the nurses, doctors, staff, EMT's and other Phelps Health Hospital employees that provided compassionate and professional care during George's final days. Finally, we wish to express our gratitude to the VA who was always there for George.
