John Robert “Bob” Black, 71, of Rolla, Missouri, passed away in his home on March 15, 2026, surrounded by his loving family.
Bob was born on March 26, 1954, in Rolla, Missouri, to JB Black and Shirley Ruth Ridenhour. From a young age, Bob learned the value of hard work, connection, and community—qualities that defined his life. He began auctioneering at just 8 years old, a gift that reflected his natural ability to engage people and his love for a good story.
On June 1, 1974, Bob married the love of his life, Jane Black, and together they built a beautiful life. He was a proud father to his daughter, Brooke (Dwayne) Bell, and his son, Brandon (Hillary) Black. He was an especially proud grandfather to his six grandsons—Nathaniel, Kyler, Cooper, Noah, Jameson, and Judson—who brought him endless joy and were often the center of his stories and smiles.
Bob wore many hats throughout his life - auctioneer, credit manager at John’s Firestone, farmer and small business owner - but no matter the role, he was known for his strong work ethic and his ability to connect with people. It didn’t take long around Bob to realize he truly never met a stranger. If you spent more than a few minutes with him, chances are you’d leave with a story, a laugh, or both.
He had a deep love for the St. Louis Cardinals and could often be found cheering them on. But more than anything, Bob loved being around people—sharing stories, telling jokes, and making others feel welcome. His infectious laugh and easygoing nature made him someone others naturally gravitated toward.
Bob’s faith was a steady and meaningful part of his life. He was baptized at the age of 18 in Lane Springs and attended Greentree Christian Church. His life reflected a quiet but genuine trust in the Lord, and that faith carried him through every season.
He is survived by his loving wife, Jane Black; his children, Brooke (Dwayne) Bell and Brandon (Hillary) Black; his six grandsons; his siblings, Diann Smith, Denise Ridenhour, Mike Ridenhour, and Greg Black; along with many extended family members and friends who were blessed to know him.
He was preceded in death by his parents, JB Black and Shirley Ridenhour; his stepfather, Bill Ridenhour; and his sister, Kimberly Black.
While our hearts are heavy, we take comfort in knowing Bob is now home with the Lord. His legacy of faith, laughter, and love for people will live on in the countless lives he touched. And if there’s a story being told or laughter being shared, it’s not hard to imagine Bob right in the middle of it.
A celebration of Bob’s life will be held on Tuesday, March 24, 2026. A visitation will be held from 4-6pm and a celebration of life at 6pm at Greentree Christian Church.
